Helping All Readers

Many children need extra support to become skilled readers. We always learn more about why some kids struggle, what effective interventions look like, how to create inclusive classrooms so every child can thrive, and much more.
WHY EDUCATION??
If we need to address healthcare, poverty, population control, unemployment and human rights, there's no better way to start than providing education to children in need. Education not only empowers children to have a secure future but also helps them grow up as responsible national and global citizens. The Right to Education (RTE) Act which came into force in 2010 made education free and compulsory for all children in the age group of 6-14 years. But even a decade later, the learning curve has not been steady for many children in the country. The socio-economic conditions of parents and lack of proper learning in schools are hindrances which prevent many children from having education.

Engaging, child-friendly libraries

We partner with schools to establish libraries and advocate with governments to ensure every child has access to a child-friendly library filled with developmentally appropriate, diverse and engaging books.

Effective literacy instruction

Our proven, data-backed instruction method combines the science of learning to read with the magic of loving to read. We know that how we teach is just as important as what we teach.

Quality, local language children's books

Through our unique role as a nonprofit book Distributor, we partner with local publishers, authors and illustrators to create and distribute diverse, culturally relevant children's books that inspire a love of reading.

We know that how we teach is just as important as what we teach. Icon trains teachers and librarians in literacy and library best practices and it shows. Primary 2 children in partner schools read on average more than twice as many correct words per minute and correctly answer 70 percent more comprehension questions compared to their peers in comparison schools. Icon also assists educators in developing their skills and knowledge on effective literacy instruction and library management, with ongoing job-embedded support from literacy coaches. Our reading instruction is centered around engaging and evidence-based instructional materials that are developed and published, such as local language student textbooks with accompanying teacher guides.
WHAT WE DO
KIlibe Icon’s flagship programme Mission Education works with the objective of empowering underprivileged children by providing education, nutrition, and wellness support. The programme is well aligned to the New Education Policy (2020), and the SDG Goal 4 (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all). Mission Education works with children (3-18 years) living in difficult circumstances, children from poor families, differently abled children, disaster-struck children, abandoned and street children, and children living in tribal belts, remote villages and hard to reach areas.
